Is Hypnosis For Phobias And Fears The Best Treatment?

If you have an irrational fear, what do you do? If you go to a medical professional such as your doctor, typically, you’ll be prescribed something like Xanax. I’ve had many clients describe their experiences with Xanax and no one has ever said it worked a treat for them. The typical comment will be that it did dull the intense fear but they still knew they had the fear, if that makes sense. Everyone I’ve heard speaking about their phobia doesn’t want it dulled – they want it gone! So is hypnosis the best treatment for phobias?

There are several options when it comes to the treatment of phobias and in this article, we’ll have a look at what are the best psychological interventions. The aim, of course, is to calm down the fight or flight response and preferably, stop it from triggering for that fear object or feared situation. So can hypnosis help you to have different emotional responses to the perceived danger?

What Causes A Person To Develop A Phobia?

There are a number of possible reasons why you might develop a phobia:

  1. Traumatic Experience: For example, if you had a really rough experience on a flight where there was lots of turbulence and you were surrounded by people who were displaying anxiety symptoms, then it’s understandable if your mind thinks you are in real danger and produces feelings of panic.
  2. Anxiety Disorders: Having a previous history of social anxiety disorder or panic disorder can make you more prone to developing specific phobias
  3. Childhood Learning: We all pick up on the emotions of those closest to us. If your mother or father was a worrier or anxious during your everyday life as a child, you are more likely to develop a phobia. If siblings had childhood phobias that you witnessed, it is possible  you can develop the same specific fear 
  4. Genetics: Recent research has pointed to a possible genetic predisposition to phobias in people who suffer from irrational fears or phobias.

Can Phobias Be Cured?

The general answer is yes. Because human beings are complex, there can be a number of different things going on at the same time in a person’s life. For instance, a person who has a fear of snakes is much different than a person suffering from OCD with a fear of snakes. 

Everyone has a different way of thinking, a different background and upbringing, different experiences, etc. Because of this, no two presentations of phobia are ever the exact same.

Self-hypnosis can be a great tool to help you visualize having a blood test or getting an injection and feeling calm and in control throughout.

What Is The Best Therapy For Phobias?

There are a number of different approaches for phobia treatment which I’ve listed below:

  1. Medication: In most cases, this just masks the problem but doesn’t actually permanently change your reaction to the feared object.
  2. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy: In my experience, it can take between 15 – 20 sessions of CBT to effectively reduce a phobia
  3. Hypnotherapy & NLP: This tends to take less time than CBT, typically 4 – 6 sessions for most irrational fears and phobias. There are many effective tools and techniques used by hypnotherapists to disconnect your fear response from the triggers you have built up.
  4. Self-hypnosis: This tends to work best for simple phobias and gives you imaginal exposure to the thing you fear while remaining calm and relaxed. This is the only truly DIY option out of your main treatment options.

Self Hypnosis For Phobias

The great thing about self-hypnosis audios is that you can listen to them in the comfort of your own home. When recorded by a suitably qualified hypnotherapist, the hypnosis sessions you listen to at home can be equally as powerful as formal hypnotherapy sessions in a hypnotherapist’s office. 

You’ll find on my phobia recordings a mental rehearsal of being in the situation that causes you panic attacks or fear and this time, having a much lower phobic response (if any). There are positive suggestions for maintaining calm breathing patterns and having much greater emotional control.

By listening for 30 days, many clients have reported astonishing results and in most cases, their phobias are either massively reduced in intensity, or else, completely gone.
