Can Self Hypnosis For Weight Loss Work For You?

You are overweight and you hate it. You’ve tried everything and nothing has worked long-term. Does this sound like you? If none of your weight loss strategies have worked in the past, can self-hypnosis for weight loss work for you? Would it help if you had healthy thought patterns about food? If your weight loss journey, in the past, has been peppered with periods of success followed by moments of self-sabotage, then weight loss hypnosis could be a godsend for you.

Understanding Self Hypnosis For Weight Loss

There are a number of component parts of self-hypnosis:

  1. Relaxation: Getting into a relaxed state of mind regularly, and letting go of what stresses us can cause a reduction in stress eating or emotional eating.
  2. Visualization: Any successful sports star will tell you that you have to believe it before you can make it happen, so in self-hypnosis, you get to visualize yourself as if you are already enjoying your healthier lifestyle and are at your ideal weight.
  3. Post Hypnotic Suggestions: These are suggestions designed to alter your eating behaviors and eliminate your bad habits.
  4. Repetition: The key to successful self-hypnosis for weight loss is having a self-hypnosis session every day to train your subconscious mind to help you achieve healthy weight loss.

Accept Your Current Body Weight

One of the mistakes I have seen people make over the years is to start dieting from the starting point of “hating” their body. That’s like saying “I’m going to climb Mount Everest with a big bag of rocks strapped to my back”. Why would you do that? If you have been using your internal voice to make derogatory comments about your body, you’ve got to stop that right now!

Practice self-love instead. When you look at your body, choose to love it, and take care of it. This will help you stay the course and actually reach that long-term target you have set for yourself. Remember, you can only healthily lose about seven pounds per month. If your target is around forty or fifty pounds, that’s going to take quite a while. You are not going to notice a huge change after one month. A combination of hating your body and not seeing dramatic weight loss results can de-motivate you.

The best way to achieve permanent change is to start by loving your body right now. When you have that winning combination of self-love plus reasonable expectations, you’ll find you achieve greater weight loss.

Creating A Positive Mindset With Self Hypnosis

If you ever saw any of the old “Rocky” movies, Rocky always has someone in his corner rooting for him. They tell him things like “You’ve got this Rocky”. As a matter of fact, if you were to be a fly on the wall in every baseball, American football, or soccer dressing room, the coach is doing something similar. No coach would ever say to their team “You’re going to get beaten. I don’t know why you’re even going out there!”

To create a positive mindset for losing weight, you’ve got to learn to believe in yourself. This can be best achieved in the hypnotic state where the unconscious mind is gently and repetitively told “You’ve got this”. You imagine yourself succeeding. You imagine challenges but you see yourself successfully overcoming them. In the deeply relaxed state of hypnosis, either during a formal hypnotherapy session with a certified hypnotherapist or while listening to a hypnosis audio, old habits can be dissolved and personal beliefs changed for the better.

Visualize Having Already Achieved Your Weight Loss Goals

One of the self-hypnosis techniques normally used on most weight loss audios is a visualization of you at your ideal weight. Typically, on most self-hypnosis audio recordings, you’ll be invited to step into your new, healthy body and experience what it feels like to eat like a naturally slim person. Depending on the focus of the particular recording, specific techniques can be used to help you feel full and satisfied with less food, to become disinterested in previous problem foods, and to learn to love regular exercise.

Visualizing yourself as having actually achieved your end goal (or ideal weight) can help boost your confidence that you are going to succeed. Living for a few minutes in your naturally slim body reassures you that you won’t always be starving, so you adjust to your new, lower caloric intake easily. You’ll experience an improved quality of life in this imaginary state which will further reinforce your determination to succeed.

Fall Out Of Love With Unhealthy Foods

Successful weight management involves forming a different relationship with unhealthy foods. Through the use of hypnosis found on self-hypnosis audios, you can find your liking for unhealthy foods or drinks decreasing. Don’t get me wrong. Unhealthy foods play a part in a healthy diet. They are just a smaller proportion of your overall calorie intake. Many self-hypnosis audio tracks also include some techniques used in cognitive-behavioral therapy such as questioning your unhealthy eating decisions and asking yourself if you could make a better decision.

Fall In Love With Being A Healthy Eater

In order to consume fewer calories and keep doing that for the rest of your life, you really have to fall in love with some of your new healthy eating choices. No matter what weight loss plan you follow, if you don’t love it, you are not going to make those positive changes permanent. This is why I regularly tell people that if they are eating healthy foods that they really don’t like, it’d probably be better if they just stopped. Forcing yourself to eat something you don’t like is a short-term strategy. You’ll never stick to it for the rest of your life!

Learn To Love Regular Exercise

For most people, exercising is a chore. It may start off well, where your enthusiasm is high. For instance, if you decide to start walking and you go for a brisk walk every day. For the first couple of days, you keep on telling yourself “This is great!”. Then, after a couple of weeks and after soothing the sore muscles, there comes a day when the weather is pretty crappy. As you look out, there are dark grey, ominous clouds or maybe it’s raining already.

You can hear your inner voice saying “Really?”. Every cell of your body is telling you that you’re an idiot for going out in that rain. It makes perfect sense to just skip it for today. Then tomorrow comes along and because you skipped it yesterday, well maybe it would be ok to skip it today because you are so busy. This is a very familiar story that I hear. You start with great intentions but then the wheels come off.

If you ask people who have been taking daily exercise for years, how they do it, they will tell you they love it and they couldn’t possibly miss it. There’s that word “love” again! When you start any form of physical activity, do what you love, and don’t overdo it.

Overcoming Emotional Eating Through Self-Hypnosis

Emotional eating is one of those things that we do in the 21st century. Yet go back to even as recently as the 1940s and 1950s, eating because you were bored would have been laughed at, or even scolded. Eating because you were stressed, or angry, or anxious wasn’t really a thing! Let’s be clear. Food should be just fuel. You need to find other ways to deal with emotions. Pause for a moment and take out a sheet of paper (or type this into your notes app). Write down all of the times you’ve eaten to solve an emotion. Now write down what those emotions were.

Next to all those emotions you have identified, now write down what your new way of satisfying those emotions is going to be. The next step is crucial. Whatever new ways you’ve decided on, you must practice them and every time you use the new way, tell yourself “Hey, that’s much better than food in solving that emotion”. After five or six incidences where you successfully use your new way, it’ll become your new habit.

Better Eating Habits

Here are some good eating habits:

  1. Right Amount Of Food: When you put food on your plate, make sure you have the right amount on the plate. DO NOT start eating until the right amount is on the plate. As a rough guide, for your main meal, you should have about three fistfuls of food on the plate. DO NOT have serving bowls on the table with more food.
  2. Eat Slowly: Your main meal should take you fifteen to twenty minutes to eat.
  3. Water: Drink two liters of still water every day. DO NOT have huge amounts of water with your meals. During mealtimes, water is just for sipping. Your main consumption of water should be in between meals.
  4. No Snacking: Eat only three meals a day. The only thing you should be having in between meals is water.
  5. The Four-Hour Rule: Each meal should be at least four hours apart. The last time for eating is at least four hours before bedtime.

(Always get professional medical advice. The above guidelines are not meant as medical advice. There are some health conditions for whom these guidelines would be not applicable. Always check with your doctor first!)
