What Is The Spiritual Perspective Of Nail Biting?

spiritual meaning of nail biting spiritual text.

As spiritual practices are subjective in nature, there are various interpretations depending on religious identity or influences. The consensus indicates that nail-biting belies some emotional vulnerability in our inner selves. This spiritual reason could be insecurity, a need to impress others, a sign of perfectionism, a coping mechanism for grief, a warning sign of stress or anxiety, or a desire for spiritual growth. There are many ways in which the spiritual significance of nail biting can seem quite similar to the root causes proposed by the field of psychology.

While the world of psychology is more interested in the specific emotions that may be at the root of this habit, the spiritual world would see this habit as a sign of spiritual imbalances. There is a belief that nailbiting is a sign of spiritual issues such as not being at peace with yourself. Negative emotions or an anxiety disorder can be what nail biting mean but it can also be a lack of self-control.

Some people regularly have nail-biting dreams and some of the dream symbolism can be very interesting. The Chinese believe that dreaming about biting your nails is a sign of good luck on the horizon. In the Western world, we tend to believe that dreaming about biting your nails is symbolic of a desire for self-improvement, a need for personal growth, or a sign of some form of spiritual vacuum that needs to be filled.

What Does Nail Biting Symbolize?

Sigmund Freud proposed that nail biting is an example of an oral fixation. Many people have oral fixations. Have you ever seen someone chewing on the end of a biro? How about people who are constantly chewing gum? Smokers and vapers are good examples of people with oral fixation.

On a sexual level, people who love performing oral sex on their partners probably have an oral fixation. Freud reckoned that this came about because, at a young age, the person’s oral needs weren’t met. An example would be a child who is prevented from breastfeeding for some reason.

Is Nail-Biting Just A Bad Habit?

Nail-biting is not just a harmless habit. If you’ve brushed it off in the past and claimed that, in your personal experience, it’s pretty harmless, you might want to think again.

Most people who bite their nails don’t give it that much thought, however, medical professionals would tell you that there are several unseen dangers to your physical health from your daily routine of nibbling at your nails. For instance, during your everyday life, your hands are the most likely part of your body to come into contact with germs or bacteria.

Sometimes, dirt can become lodged under your fingernails. Every time you raise your hand to your mouth, you are introducing bacteria or germs to your mouth and can become seriously ill as a result.

Also, by biting around your nails, it is possible that, at times, you may cause damage to your skin or cuticles. These no longer act as a barrier against germs or bacteria if they are damaged, so you are in danger of introducing potentially dangerous germs or bacteria directly into your bloodstream.

What Does Nail Biting Tell You About A Person?

Here are some of the reasons other people may think are the reasons behind your nail biting:

  • Perfectionism: perfectionists tend not to have a very high tolerance for frustration which can make them somewhat agitated. This can also be a sign of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Nailbiting can be a subconscious attempt to alleviate this frustration.
  • Stress: this can be, for example, stress from your living situation or family surroundings, stress from your job, self-imposed stress (judging yourself harshly), etc.
  • Worry: for example, worrying about an upcoming presentation you have to give, worrying about finances, worrying about a family member’s health, etc.
  • Traumatic Life Events: for example, a family member being diagnosed with cancer, a partner cheating, losing a job, etc.

As you may have observed from the world around you, there are various different levels of nail biting. Some will just have very short nails while others will have nails that are bitten down so far that there are red patches of skin in the vicinity of the nail.

Is Nail Biting A Sign Of Genius?

Some nail-biters have joked that their destructive habit is a sign of genius. The really funny thing about this is that there is some evidence to show that nail-biters may actually be more intelligent. While the physical habit is obviously unsightly,

in recent years, research published in the Journal Of Behavior Therapy And Experimental Psychiatry has shown that it is more than a mere habit. In their research, it was shown that by indulging in this repetitive behavior, the individual is attempting to achieve emotional well-being. The act of nail biting reveals the personality traits of the individual as a person who is aiming for perfection.

Is Nail Biting Part Of Anxiety?

Yes, nail-biting can definitely be part of anxiety but there are other possible explanations too. It can also be a symptom of

  • a compulsion (part of the OCD spectrum)
  • a desire for control (or a reaction when things are out of control)
  • a sign of mental health conditions such as ODD (Oppositional Defiance Disorder), developmental disorders, or panic disorders.

What Happens When You Bite Your Nails Too Much?

Here are some of the side effects that most nail-biters have never even considered:

  • Tooth Problems: When you bite your nails constantly, there is more pressure on one or two teeth, and over time, this may cause your teeth to look crooked or out of line. When the nail gives way, now the teeth bang into each other which can cause chipping of your dental enamel.
  • Infections: Constant biting can damage the skin near the nail which means your skin no longer acts as a barrier to infection. The bacteria that have gathered under the nail can be swallowed (even if you spit out the nail fragment), and this can cause stomach infections.
  • Fungal Infections: Because the nail bed has very little cover, fungal infections can creep in under your nail, discoloring it.
  • TMJ Problems: Your jaw can start aching because of the constant biting

How To Stop Your Nail-Biting Habit

The first thing to realize is that scolding yourself, or self-criticizing does not work. How many kids have endured their parents shouting at them about their nail-biting habit? Has it ever worked? I sincerely doubt it. There may be one or two cases where it has worked but a far better approach is through positive reinforcement. I always recommend a step-by-step approach to my nail biting clients.

  • STEP 1 – Make A “Must” Decision: Many people look at their nails and say to themselves “I should stop doing that!” or “I would love to have really nice nails”. Neither of these will work. The only decision that will produce long-term results is “I must stop biting my nails right now! I don’t care how much it takes but I will definitely have those really nice nails by (eg. a month’s time).”
  • STEP 2 – Educate Yourself: Find lots of pictures and images of bad things that have happened to people who have continued to bite their nails. Close your eyes (when it’s safe to do so) and step into that person’s body and feel the pain coming from your fingernails, see how horrible they look, and hear a doctor warning you of life-threatening consequences.
  • STEP 3 – Bring Up The Feeling:  Keep your eyes closed and imagine the urge to bite your nails. Maybe recall some time in the past when you had a strong urge to bite your nails or imagine some scenario where you can barely resist doing it. When that urge is at its peak, immediately switch your mind to some scene where you feel an overwhelmingly beautiful feeling of satisfaction from doing something completely different and really feel it, very quickly.
  • STEP 4 – Listen to my self-hypnosis audio “Stop Nail Biting” every day for thirty days
