What Is A Social Anxiety Disorder?
There are many definitions of social anxiety disorder but the best social anxiety meaning I have come across comes from Wikipedia
“Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD), also known as social phobia is an anxiety disorder characterized by fear and anxiety in social situations, causing considerable distress and impaired ability to function in at least some aspects of daily life”
What Are Causes Of Social Anxiety Disorder?
There is no specific cause of social anxiety disorder. Researchers have been curious to ask is social anxiety disorder genetic but so far, the concensus is that they are not sure.
The best available knowledge now indicates that it could be one main factor or a number of factors in combination that act as social anxiety causes.
- Genetics – we cannot rule out a genetic cause for social anxiety disorder
- Learned Behaviour – if a close family member (eg, a father or mother) has social anxiety disorder, it can be learned from them
- Victim Of Negative Circumstances – bullying, witnessing abuse at home, being a victim of abuse
- Chemical Imbalance – lower levels of the “happy” chemicals like serotonin, etc.
- Bad Communication Skills – if you just can’t think of the appropriate thing to say quickly enough, you can strengthen your fear response
- Low Self Esteem – feeling bad about yourself helps you to withdraw from social situations
- Appearance – being obese, having some physical attribute that others might find ugly or odd, or perhaps just not reacting in a way that other people judge as “normal”.
- Mental Health Issue – for instance, if you have social anxiety and adhd. Social anxiety or autism is sometimes a question that needs an answer. These can cause reactions in other people that can contribut to the delopment of social anxiety disorder. Or perhaps it’s your own judgement about how acceptable these things are.
It’s even come to light that there is an increase in social anxiety after lockdown so researchers are now looking at whether there is a link between social anxiety and depression.
Quotes On Social Anxiety
I think some of these quotes are really profound and if you can learn a lesson from them, they can inspire you and help you with how to deal with social anxiety.
“What other people think of me is none of my business.”
Dr. Wayne W. Dyer, Self Help Author
“Today I escaped anxiety. Or no, I discarded it, because it was within me, in my own perceptions – not outside.”
Marcus Aurelius, Roman Emperor
My personal favourite quote to help you figure out how to get over social anxiety is this –
“What you think, you become. What you feel, you attract. What you imagine, you create.”
Buddha
Test For Social Anxiety Disorder
There is no medical test for social anxiety. So if you want to know the answer to “do I have social anxiety?”, there is no blood test, no scan or no diagnostic machinery that can tell you that. However, there are tests like the Liebowitz Social Anxiety Scale or the Social Interaction Anxiety Scale. Below you’ll find a social anxiety test that you can download which will help you to recognise your signs of social anxiety.

Is Social Anxiety A Mental Illness?
In strict medical terms, the answer is yes. You’ll find in fifth edition of the DSM (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders), social anxiety disorder is listed as a diagnosable mental illness. The World Health Organisation (WHO) also recognises it as an illness.
Once you receive a proper diagnosis from a suitably qualified medical professional, there is the option of social anxiety medication such as anti-depressants or anti-anxiety pills and social anxiety exercises and social anxiety tips that a psychotherapist may advise you about.
Social Anxiety Symptoms
Symptoms of social anxiety share a lot in common with typical fear or phobia symptoms. Here’s how to know if you have social anxiety
- Intense negative anticipation of a social situation
- Worrying or catastrophising in advance
- Nausea in advance of the event
- Feelings of wanting to avoid the situation, immediately coming up with a plausible excuse to get out of that event
- During the event, experiencing noticeable physical symptoms like blushing, sweating, looking or feeling awkward, trembling, heart racing, etc.
- Strong fear of what others might think
- Looking away and refusing to make eye contact and finding that really awkward
- Negative self talk and feelings of low self esteem
- Negative comparisons to others (eg. “they are so much better than me at socialising.”)
The Ideal Job For People With Social Anxiety
I have had clients in my clinic who have said “social anxiety keeps me from working”. Of course, you can let it limit you or else you could think about how to deal with social anxiety. One of the best ways is to find a job that actually suits you. This varies depending on what your social anxiety feels like. Obviously an extrovert with social anxiety will be suited to different jobs that people at the more severe end of the social anxiety scale simply because there are different types of social anxiety.
Here are some of the most suitable jobs for you. (My pick of the ideal job for people with social anxiety is No. 1)
- Landscape Gardening – the simple reason is that when you are operating machinery (like strimmers or grass mowers), you’ll have ear protectors on, which means you can’t communicate with anyone even if you wanted to. This tends to be a solitary job where people let you alone to get on with doing the job.
- Working With Animals – (eg. dog walker, dog groomer, vet, working in an animal rescue centre, etc.). This works well because the focus is not on you. The focus is on the animals.
- Accountant / Book-keeper – limited interaction with other people depending on the type of environment you work in.
