What Is The Main Cause Of Snoring?
There are some common causes of why people snore and some of them are beyond their control. Here’s a list of all of the main causes of snoring so that you can possibly find the right solution to them:
- Shape Of Mouth And Sinuses: The shape and size of your soft palate (that’s the part of the roof of your mouth closer to the back of the throat), can contribute to chronic snoring. Also, whether your throat muscles are slack or loose can make a snoring problem worse. Other anatomical problems that could be the underlying cause of the problem are inflamed or swollen tonsils or sinuses. This is why allergies should also be considered as a possible root cause. It might even be that your partner has a deviated septum. Each of these is a medical condition that requires attention from a doctor.
- Nasal Congestion: Respiratory infections such as colds or touches of flu make it more difficult to breathe through your nose, especially if you feel all stuffed up. Allergies such as hay fever, allergic rhinitis or sinus infections can cause swelling of the nasal passages which also make it more difficult to breathe through your nose. If this is the case, sometimes a simple antihistamine can make all the difference. If it’s more serious than that, it’s time to get some medical advice.
- Alcohol Consumption: When you get a little tipsy, your muscles relax. This is also true of the muscles at the back of your throat. When your throat muscles relax, the surrounding tissue becomes less taut and vibrates as air passes by, causing a loud snoring sound.
- Sleep Position: You’ve probably noticed that when your partner is in different sleeping positions, their snoring is either louder or quieter. For most snorers, lying on their side is the best way to ensure the quietest nightly snoring. Lying on their back will typically cause snoring to be louder. Maybe you can arrange a pillow or cushion to be behind their back as they sleep to encourage them not to lie on their back.
- Obesity: If your partner has experienced weight gain and you’ve also noticed they are snoring louder, their obesity could be related to the snoring. Excess weight, especially around the neck area can cause a higher risk of snoring. The solution is to politely encourage your partner to lose some weight. If this is a contributory factor to their snoring then you’ll have a better night’s sleep when they lose some weight
- Smoking: Inhaling cigarette smoke, or even vape smoke can cause swelling in the throat and nasal passage which could be a part of why you experience poor quality sleep. Tell them to download my “Stop Smoking Successfully” hypnosis mp3 and listen for 30 days.
- Sleep Apnea: Otherwise referred to as Obstructive Sleep Apnea, this is a sleep disorder that requires medical attention. Your partner may need to attend a sleep clinic to properly diagnose and observe the problem. Oral appliances such as a CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) machine may be required to ensure your partner’s health does not become a major issue.

What Is Snoring Spouse Syndrome?
Snoring Spouse Syndrome is the term that describes when you (the non-snoring partner) experience significant disruption to your sleep or quality of life. When your sleep is interrupted regularly during the night, you could suffer from high blood pressure, daytime fatigue, lack of focus, irritability, depression, or other health problems. There can also be significant relationship problems as a result of a partner’s snoring. The non-snoring partner typically gets quite angry with the snorer. If this happens frequently, it can lead to sleeping in a separate room or even a relationship breakup.
Should I Wake My Snoring Partner?
I always recommend good communication in advance of waking a snoring partner. Tell your partner that their snoring is causing you problems and say to them that when it happens again, you are going to have to wake them. Say “I’m sorry” in advance but tell them you have no other option. Many snorers think it’s just a bit of a laugh that they were snoring but they don’t appreciate how frustrating it is.
Your job is to educate them. As part of getting the message across to them, maybe you might way to record the audio of their snoring on the audio recorder app on your phone to prove to them how loud it is. When you are communicating the extent of the problem, it’s probably best to do it at a time when you are calm and they are in a mood to listen. Remember, the future of your relationship could be at stake here!

Can Snoring Be Cured?
Whether snoring can be cured or not depends on the individual case. In many cases, snoring can be reduced significantly or stopped by the following:
- Lifestyle Changes: If your partner’s weight is a major contributory factor to the loudness of their snoring, you might gently encourage them to lose weight. If they need surgery, perhaps you could encourage them to take the plunge and do it. If they smoke, maybe you could show them this link “Stop Smoking Successfully“. If their snoring is caused by alcohol before bedtime, maybe you could talk to them and ask them to refrain.
- Sleep Apnea: If your partner’s snoring is caused by sleep apnea, there are solutions available such as CPAP machines
- White Noise Machine: While this does not cure the snoring, it can make life a lot easier for you.
- Self Hypnosis: You could encourage your partner to download and listen to “Stop Snoring“, my hypnosis download for snoring.
Do Couples Divorce Because Of Snoring?
There is no evidence to suggest that snoring alone has been the cause of divorce. However, it can be one of the contributory factors to marital breakdown. Let’s face it! It’s going to be really difficult not to get angry at your partner if their snoring keeps you awake every night. Using separate bedrooms as a solution will cause a lack of physical intimacy and closeness, so it’s hard to see how snoring won’t have an effect on a relationship. The best advice I give to snorers and their partners is to work together to find a solution that works for both of you and keep communicating nicely with each other.

Does Hypnosis For Snoring Actually Work?
I regularly get asked, “Can hypnosis work for snoring?”. The answer is yes for both the snorer themselves but also for the long-suffering partner. I regularly tell this story about a woman who came to see me and jokingly said “You’ve got to help me. My husband snores like an express train and if he doesn’t stop soon, I am going to stab him to death!”. It’s ok. She assured me that she was joking!
I gave her a recording called “Stop Snoring” for her husband and told her to ask him to listen for the following 30 days. I also made a personalized self-hypnosis recording with her where I suggested that from now on, every time she heard his snoring, it would remind her of a lullaby that she heard as a child which she found soothing and relaxing. She contacted me after a month and told me her marriage had been transformed and that now, she looked forward to hearing her husband snoring. She even said that his snoring now helped her to go to sleep.
