Does Hypnotherapy Work For Weight Loss? Incredible!

When you saw the word “Incredible!” as part of the title on Google, did that make you click on this page? There are so many other articles written about “Does hypnotherapy work for weight loss” but yet you clicked on this one! I put the word “incredible” there deliberately to show you how easy it is for your mind to be attracted to something and then take action. This is why some major stores put bakeries near the entrance to their store. They reckon the smell will get you feeling pleasure and then you’ll come in and spend on anything they push on you.

The food industry uses psychology all the time, for instance, to get us to buy a multipack of biscuits instead of the one pack we actually wanted. We have come to learn from numerous media campaigns, that chocolate will make us feel better, eating nachos will spice up our lives, and so on. Big brands are constantly trying to associate emotions with food because they know that if they do that really well, they will make you a slave to their brand.

Then there’s the role that our early childhood has on our weight issues. Were you told that you were being “good” when you ate all your food? It sounds innocent enough, doesn’t it? Did you learn to associate feeling better with munching on some snack food while you were a child? Bad training about food in childhood leads to obese adults. Then, of course, there’s all that junk we learn about food from “diet clubs”. Essentially, our programming about food, in most cases is utter crap!

It’s no wonder that almost 42% of the population of the United States is obese (2023 State Of Obesity Report). That’s one in every two and a half people. That’s roughly the same as how many people got Covid at its height. Look at what we did in response to Covid. We shut schools. We shut businesses. There was a state of utter panic for a while. People were scared of covid but they tolerated obesity just fine.

Setting The Correct Weight Loss Goals

Most people mess this up. I’ve had people come to me who wanted to lose weight because they have a wedding coming up in four months time. I normally tell them I can’t help them. It’s not that I can’t. It’s more that I won’t. You see, wanting to lose weight only for an event like this is like the definition of yo-yo dieting. Essentially, the message you are giving your subconscious mind is “I’m going to starve myself for a couple of months so that I can get into that dress for the wedding and after the wedding, I can go back to eating all the crap I used to eat.” So, please, if you are thinking of losing weight and it’s for some event or other, just stop. Don’t do that. You are doing it wrongly!

Wanting to be at your ideal weight is a lifelong goal. As one colleague of mine jokes “A healthier lifestyle is not just for Christmas, it’s all year long”. If your weight loss efforts are designed to get you to your ideal body weight and, much more importantly, to keep you there for the rest of your life, now you’re on the right track. Learning to eat like a naturally slim person involves falling in love with your new healthier food choices. If you are “trying to be good”, you are doing it the wrong way.

setting the correct weight loss goals on a laptop

Think about it like this, if you have a new boyfriend (or girlfriend), do you have to “try to love them”, or do you actually fall in love with them? I think it would be rather weird if you heard a friend saying “I am trying so hard to fall in love with him/her”. In the same way, if you are making lifestyle changes in order to achieve significant weight loss, and yet you regard that as a chore, you’ll never succeed long term, because your unconscious mind will continue to show you pictures of all the foods you really love but “can’t have”.

In setting the correct weight loss goals, we have to see ourselves in the future being able to have a treat every so often. We have to see ourselves maybe having some alcohol at a party. When we envision our future selves at our correct weight, we have got to see ourselves enjoying our new good habits so much that we don’t want to change them…..ever! Fewer calories have got to seem more enjoyable!

Understanding Good Eating Habits

It’s quite simple. For most people that means:

  1. Eating Three Small Meals Every Day: Just to be clear, this means never skipping a meal. When I say small, I do not mean piling the plate high or going back for seconds! Each plateful should contain a maximum of three fistfuls of food.
  2. Having a Four-Hour Gap Between Each Meal: Your stomach is designed to hold the food for four hours to digest it. Putting more food in before the four hours is up just means the original food in your stomach gets pushed out and then is put on as fat because it’s not digested properly.
  3. Drinking Two liters of Water Every Day: This is not negotiable. If you don’t like water, you’ve got to get to like it. This also means absolutely no fizzy drinks of any sort on a daily basis.
  4. Having Thirty Minutes Of Brisk Exercise Every Day: The only excuse not to do this is if you have some medical reason why you can’t exercise. I always explain that this does not have to be a formal exercise like a spinning class or going to the gym, This can simply be walking to the shop instead of taking the car.
  5. Understanding What Nutritious Food Actually Is: There are some really good websites out there like Nutrition.gov in the United States or the NHS Eat Well website in the UK.

What Is "Healthy" Eating?

Contrary to popular belief, healthy eating is not eating a carrot stick and doing that fifteen times a day. Remember, one of your aims is good health. Getting on board with any weight loss method that encourages drastic changes is stupidity. Don’t do it! Observe naturally slim people. Not the people who are obsessed with food or who say “I can’t have this or I can’t have that”. Naturally slim people never really talk about food. They just instinctively know what’s the right time, the right amount, when to stop, etc. They never have to think about it. Eating in any other way would seem a bit weird to them because they love the way they eat.

Let’s get it right here. Naturally slim people eat unhealthy foods from time to time. They don’t beat themselves up over it. They simply make it a “once every so often thing” – not an everyday thing. I always encourage my clients to select the ideal weight they want to be and then ask, “If I was that weight right now, how am I eating differently?”. When people talk to me about their weight loss journey up until they come to see me, typically, I’ll hear stories of bad body image (hating their body), feeling guilt about eating, or forcing themselves into doing regular exercise that they don’t really like.

In general, to answer the question “What is healthy eating?”, I would say reducing the amount of processed food or sugar and increasing the use of more natural foods. It’s about decreasing the intake of factory-made liquids (like sodas) and increasing intake of water. But the most important factor has got to be learning to love your new healthy diet so that you genuinely don’t want to go back to the old way of eating…..ever!!!

Where To Get Good Dietary Advice

There are thousands of places where you can get dietary advice. The question is “Is it good dietary advice?”. For instance, the big burger chains will tell you, in their TV adverts, that their beef is the best. A slimming club will tell you a particular yogurt is great. Is that true? Can you trust that? Remember, large brands are working in their own best interests, not yours!

Probably the best place to go for good dietary advice is to health professionals who are qualified in nutrition. Even here though, you have to be careful in who you select. Some are Nazis in disguise, but others have a more real-life, relaxed approach and can teach you a lot about what types of food and food choices can help you with your weight management.

If you can’t afford to pay for private professional help, there are some good websites where you can begin. I always recommend starting with websites that have a government or healthcare angle. In the United States, there’s https://www.nutrition.gov/ and in the UK, there’s https://www.nhs.uk/live-well/eat-well/

Self-hypnosis can be a great tool to help you change how you feel about sugar and make it natural to say no to sugary foods every day.

The Psychological Factors That Can Sabotage You

  1. Hating Your Body: If you hate your body right now, remember, when you begin a weight loss program, you’ll probably still hate it one month in. After one month, you’re not going to be able to see a huge difference in how you look. Negative self-talk about your body can really mess with your motivation and tempt you to throw the towel in. One of the most effective methods that I regularly use is one that helps you to start loving yourself now, the way you currently are.
  2. Silly Goals: As regularly explain to my clients, any idiot can lose 15 to 20 pounds in a month. What’s worse is that there are some people out there in slimming clubs who would praise you for this craziness. When you understand what your body needs and behave in a loving and caring fashion, you’ll set more realistic goals. Slow and steady wins the race. There are no medals for being an idiot.
  3. Emotional Eating: Getting your emotions mixed up with food can really sabotage you because no matter how much you intend to eat healthily, you’ve got this strong emotion tugging at you, saying “I need to be soothed!”. If your only strategy in the past has been to eat in order to soothe that emotion, it’ll be rather difficult to succeed
  4. Should Rather Than Must: Many of us think that we “should” lose weight. Maybe our doctor has told us that we should. Or maybe we just know it ourselves. Knowing we “should” lose weight is quite different from “I must lose weight and I must do it right now!”. Find the strong, compelling reason why you must do it now, or you’ll probably fall off the wagon at some stage.
  5. Forgetting It’s About Love: You have to fall in love with this new healthy lifestyle. Every part of it has to be something you comment on favorably using your internal voice. It cannot be a chore. If it’s a chore, you are using your willpower and that runs out eventually. If you forget to fall in love with those changes you are making, they won’t become permanent.

Health Conditions That Interfere With Weight Loss

There are a number of health-related conditions that will stop you from, or hinder you from losing weight. It is really important to know about these because, if you aren’t aware, then a medical condition or side effect of medication can make you feel like you’re a failure when you can’t lose weight like everyone else can. We’ve always got to be aware of what’s possible. For instance, if I had one leg, I wouldn’t set a goal of beating Usain Bolt in a 100m race.

Here are some of those medical issues that can slow or stop weight loss:

  1. Side Effects Of Medication: People who take anti-depressant medication are probably already aware of this, but some aren’t. Anti-depressants slow your metabolism. This means you simply cannot burn fat at the same rate as someone whose metabolism is functioning at a high level and who doesn’t take anti-depressants. This does not mean you can’t lose weight. It just means it’ll probably happen at a slower rate
  2. Food Intolerance: An example is an intolerance to gluten. I once had a guy come to see me who told me he just could not lose weight, no matter what he did. We spoke about whether he had ever been successful at healthy weight loss and he said that he once went on one of these meal replacement diets and it really worked for him. When I looked it up, that weight loss method was gluten-free. I then advised him to learn more about going gluten-free and six months later he contacted me to tell me he had lost a large amount of weight.
  3. The State Of Your Metabolism: I have a friend in the town I live in and she can literally eat tons of junk and never puts on a pound. I’m sure you’ve probably come across people like that too. It’s natural to ask “How come she can do it and I can’t?”, but we really shouldn’t ask that question. Every human being’s body is different. Each of our metabolisms is different. We’ve just got to remember that we can slow our metabolism by yo-you dieting because our hormone levels change with that up-and-down cycle. One of the best things you can do for yourself is learn how to boost your metabolism naturally.

How Successful Is Hypnosis For Weight Loss?

Hypnotherapy sessions can help you to get your head in the game. When you are in the hypnotic state, you can start to imagine yourself at your ideal weight. Through the use of hypnosis, you can experience, at a subconscious level, loving your new healthy lifestyle. Hypnotherapy techniques are many and varied but one of those techniques, for instance, can help to make you feel truly revolted by a comfort food that you previously would have called “your downfall”.

A good certified hypnotherapist can condition your mind to reject emotional eating and find healthier ways of satisfying those emotions without turning to food. The aim is that food becomes just fuel, no longer a source of emotional soothing. Mental imagery can be created where you say yes to the right amount of food on the plate and immediately reject a plate that is too full.

If, maybe because you can’t afford a number of sessions with a trained hypnotherapist, or because there isn’t a suitably qualified hypnotherapist in your region, you could opt for self-hypnosis techniques instead. Perhaps the best way to do this is to download a self-hypnosis audio and listen to it daily at home for the best results. By listening every day, you are getting a self-hypnosis session every day which, by verbal repetition, will encourage positive changes.

Over the years, over 90% of my clients have successfully lost weight and kept it off. I checked on these people twelve months on and 90% have told me they have maintained their new, healthier weight.

How Long Does It Take For Weight Loss Hypnosis To Work?

How long it takes depends on the person and the specific goal. For instance, if your goal is to never drink soda again, the use of hypnotherapy in just one session can be enough to make that change. When it’s more about changing a lifetime of micro habits, those behavior changes can take longer as we have to investigate what’s called secondary gain. Secondary gain is all about what you are really getting from the behavior. This can sometimes take a bit of time to fully tease out but it can be vital for long-term success.
